Chinese toddler was rescued from a 40ft well

This incredible footage was recorded as firefighters in China used an iPhone camera to seek out a two-year-old boy who had fallen down a well.

The child plunged into the 40ft shaft while playing with friends outside a small village near Mengzi City, in Yunnan Province.

Villagers raised the alarm after they heard him crying, tossing down a rope to which he clung for about an hour as they waited for the emergency services to arrive.

A rescue worker on the scene said the concrete well's water level was more than 20ft below ground.

When the fire service arrived they struggled to pull the trapped toddler out of the narrow hole.

Emergency workers fed in a hose attached to an oxygen canister to keep the boy from suffocating, along with a line to hoist him up.

But as they had only harnesses designed for adults, the terrified child kept slipping from their grip.

Then, in a stroke of genius, the rescue team taped an Apple smartphone to a rope, lowering it into the narrow shaft so its video function could show them how best to loop the straps around the boy.

Chinese state media said he was hauled out of the well and freed by about 10pm local time on Saturday (noon GMT).

Doctors at a nearby hospital said the boy was left bruised but not seriously injured. Then, in a stroke of genius, the rescue team taped an Apple smartphone to a rope, lowering it into the narrow shaft so its video function could show them how best to loop the straps around the boy.

No Falklands Compromise As PM Hails Heroes

David Cameron has marked the 30th anniversary of the invasion of the Falklands by saying Britain will continue to protect the islanders' right to choose their future.

Three decades after Argentinian troops seized Port Stanley, the capital, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the task force sent by Margaret Thatcher to defend the islands.

Recent months have seen tensions rising between London and Buenos Aires, with President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner's government loudly asserting its sovereignty claim to Las Malvinas, as it calls the archipelago.

In a gesture of reconciliation, Mr Cameron said in a statement to mark the occasion that the anniversary should be a day to remember the 649 Argentinians who died in the conflict as well as the 255 British armed forces personnel who were killed.

But he said Britain would not compromise on the islanders' right to self-determination.

"Thirty years ago today the people of the Falkland Islands suffered an act of aggression that sought to rob them of their freedom and their way of life," he said.

The Voice Of The Falklands Recalls Invasion

Thirty years ago this week Argentinian forces attacked the Falkland Islands, starting a war which would last 74 days and claim more than 1,000 lives on both sides.

On the night of the invasion radio broadcaster Patrick Watts was ordered by the islands' governor to stay on air and keep residents informed about what was happening.

"At around two o'clock the Governor Rex Hunt called me and said all attempts to stop the Argentines invading the Falklands had failed and we can expect them by dawn," Patrick said.

"Those words hit me hard and I started to shake pretty hard."

But he continued broadcasting. As the assault started worried islanders called in relaying what they could see - tanks, troops and the Argentinian flag flying.

But Patrick remembers one caller in particular, who said: "I can see the stars."

Patrick told him: "For goodness sake don't stay outside. Get inside."

The man responded: "No, I am looking through the roof. There is a hole in the roof." more
