How to easily play divx, rm, mkv, vob files directly in Windows Media Player?

Many of you might have got movies from friends or family members in formats like .divx or the latest .mkv format and your Windows Media Player might have simply refused to play such a file - what do you do? Very simple, Windows Media player uses something called as a codec to convert a file from a given format (like .avi or .divx or .vob) to the native display format that is shown on screen.

All you need to do is download the best FREE codec pack that is available online - called the K-Lite Codec Pack and install it on your system. This installation is very small and free from any virus or trojans - so it's safe too. The beauty of this installation is that you can now play these files with extension .divx, .rm, .mkv, .vob, etc directly inside your Windows Media Player. This very safely eliminates the need to install any other player software.

Mostly folks install the Real Player to play .rm, .ram or .rmvb files - but with the above installation you don't have to have 2 players on your system. Also, .divx files are usually played on DIVX Player - but even that is eliminated.

I have also tested playing the iPod file types like .mp4 and .3gp files directly in Windows Media Player after installing the codec Pack.

Some of the formats that the codec pack supports for direct play from within Windows Media Player are:

DirectShow video decoding filters:
- XviD
- DivX
- On2 VP6
- On2 VP7
- MPEG-2 (Cyberlink)
- MPEG-2 (Gabest)

DirectShow audio decoding filters:
- AC3/DTS/LPCM (AC3Filter)
- Vorbis (CoreVorbis)
- AAC (MONOGRAM)

DirectShow audio parsers:
- FLAC (madFLAC)
- WavPack (CoreWavPack)
- MusePack (MONOGRAM)
- Monkey's Audio
- OptimFROG (RadLight)
- AMR (MONOGRAM)
- DC-Bass Source
- AC3/DTS Source (AC3File)

DirectShow source filters:
- AVI splitter (Gabest)
- AVI splitter (Haali Media Splitter)
- MP4 splitter (Haali Media Splitter)
- MP4 splitter (Gabest)
- Matroska splitter (Haali Media Splitter)
- Matroska splitter (Gabest)
- Ogg splitter (Haali Media Splitter)
- Ogg splitter (Gabest)
- MPEG PS/TS splitter (Gabest)
- MPEG PS/TS splitter (Haali Media Splitter)
- FLV splitter (Gabest)
- CDXA Reader (Gabest)

VFW video codecs:
- XviD
- DivX
- x264
- On2 VP6
- On2 VP7
- Intel Indeo 4
- Intel Indeo 5
- Intel I.263
- huffyuv
- YV12 (Helix)

ACM audio codecs:
- MP3 (Fraunhofer)
- MP3 (LAME)
- AC3ACM
- Vorbis
- DivX Audio

Real Alternative:
- RealMedia codecs
- RealMedia plugin for Internet Explorer
- RealMedia plugin for Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape/Opera/Chrome
- RealMedia DirectShow splitter

List of Free recording / editing softwares available online : Studio Quality mixing at home

Last week, I got a new mic for my pc and wanted to record some songs - but I found that Windows doesn't come inbuilt with a good quality music recorder software. So I started researching online to see what some of the pro's use and what are the essential features that are needed to make a recording software good.

I also researched on various aspects involved in editing the sound bytes you have recorded. Since, most of the post-production editing is what makes the music much more joyful and pleasant. there are just too many settings and things to take care while recording is what I came to know.

So, here is a list of the top 4 Free recording and also editing softwares that are there in the internet. Do check them out:

  • Audacity : This is by far the best audio recording and editor software. It is in par excellence within the entire free software as well as the paid software market for audio recording and editing software. It makes professional editing a child's play all at the comfort of your fingertips.

It comes with some very cool features like Multitrack recording and editing - I just love this, coz you can have different background music's playing on different tracks and finally merge all of them to produce a fantastic mp3. It is also packed with multiple functions to improve the recorded sound and also include different kinds of effects. I for once, love the echo effect - and also play the fool with the reverse effect.

There are two versions of Audacity available for download - but I would suggest you to pick the beta without fear - I have used it for sometime now and it works perfectly. One more thing is that you will need to download a codec called Lame to save all your recordings in MP3 format.

  • PodProducer : This piece of software is designed especially for those on the move but need to record stuff. Though the software is specially designed for PodCasters (a new breed of Bloggers of sorts who speak out the articles and produce shows rather than write articles). It has features that are similar to using a mixer. You have the special ability to add and mix music and effects while you sing.

But the flip side of this software is that it does not allow editing of the sound files you have created. Also, I have a small tip for you - keep the volume of your voice high and keep the background(mix music) volume lower for better results.

  • WildVoice : WildVoice's functionality is very similar in manner to Podproducer but it is much more powerful deep down. As usual you can record your voice or song while playing music or effects in the background. But if your OS is Vista, you'd probably not use this software since it has many problems (I tested this software on my Vista test Box and had just too many issues).

It comes in-built with some very nice sound effects that you can be very useful for you. Looks like the developers have stopped working on newer versions for quite sometime now but the current version available for download works fine (except that the Vista OS issue).

  • Wavosaur : This is by far the smallest available sound recorder and also comes in a portable compressed zip format. So no need to install it to make it work, just carry it in a usb and plug 'n' play when needed. The best thing is that it also allows you to do some advanced editing too.

Do check these softwares and let me know how you like them? If you are using any other softwares that for recording and editing sound - do let me know.

Easy to use Free iTunes alternative software for Windows Vista

Most of the folks will say that Apple’s iTunes software used for syncing and storing music/videos on your iPod is not a lightweight application - makes your system to run much slower.

I have been installing and testing iTunes release after release for quite sometime and I have noticed that the total over all installation does grow to include several hundred MB of temp files (much like Nero does). First of all, iTunes is a 80MB installable. One may argue that 80 MB is not much of disk space nowadays, but installing software isn’t like storing files. Software registers itself to thousands of places, adds many, many files to many, many different folders. Also, it may add services, which also run in the background, thus perhaps slowing down your computer. 80 MB may also be compressed. It might be much larger when installed and all files are taken in to account.

This is exactly where Free iTunes alternatives come into the picture and Froddle Pod is one such alternative. Froddle Pod is awesome. I was using iTunes and now I’ve tried out this app, I don’t think I’ll be going back to iTunes. Froddle Pod already has heaps of features iTunes doesn’t. I loved the normalization feature, just plugged my iPod in, clicked normalize iPod, went and got a bite to eat and came back to an iPod with completely normalized music. Froddle Pod is definitely worth the download!

It certainly is not as feature rich as iTunes but it has the essential stuff hat you need: It can copy music and videos from and to an iPod which is the most wanted feature for an iPod user. Froddle Pod can also backup and restore all data that is stored on an iPod. Go ahead and give Froddle Pod a spin!!

So would you go for these peeping toms?

Apple unveils new iPod Nano and iPod Touch

The New iPod Nano

A new iPod Nano has been unveiled by Apple - the new one is the thinnest iPod Apple has made so far and one that has added curved glass over its screen, a new user interface and an accelerometer that puts the iPod into shuffle mode when it's shaken. The best of it all is that Apple has slashed the price too :)

With a newly added accelerometer, the iPod will now allow for a very cool and interesting functionality that was first unveiled with the launch of the famed Apple iPhone. How it works is : if you happen to lay the device on its side it will bring up the Cover Flow view, and shaking the device would shuffle the songs in the playlist automatically - now that's really cool.

The new iPod Nano will also be available in eight different colors: silver, purple, blue, green, orange, yellow, pink, Red, and black. The new prices for the iPod Nano are: iPod Nano will retail for $149 for the 8 GB model and a cool $199 for the 16 GB model. Both are available immediately online. It'll be available in the coming week in a retail store near you.

The New iPod Touch

Apple also unveiled a new and much improved iPod touch it's got a new design adjustment. I for once feel that the iPod Touch seems to follow along the same lines as the iPhone 3G, although the Touch's back is made of stainless steel (the iPhone's is plastic as I had pointed out in my earlier article "31 Reasons Why you Shouldn't Buy an iPhone 3G!"). The rest of the features of the Touch have stayed the same, except for the addition of an accelerometer in the Touch too.

Similarly like in the Nano, the new Touch will feature the shake-to-shuffle function, as well as the Genius functionality. Apple has also added new integrated volume controls. A speaker has also been added, though at the press conference Jobs cautioned that the audio quality would only be suited for "casual listeners".

The new prices for the iPod Touch are: the 8 GB is priced at $229, the 16 GB at $299, and the 32 GB at $399.

How to fix Windows Explorer crash when viewing folder with .avi / movie files?

My new machine suddenly got a strange problem. I had recently upgraded my Windows XP Professional to Service Pack 3(SP3), but I donno how this strange problem started all of a sudden.

Problem : Windows Explorer hangs/crashes when opening folders that have movie files(.avi files). I searched the internet for many solutions ranging from deleting some registry keys and also un-registering some Thumbnail creation dlls. But none of the solutions worked.

Solution : Finally, this is the solution that I cam up with and it works fine now. I have DivX as well as K-Lite codecs installed in my machine. So I first upgraded my DivX Package to the latest version available on the net. Then I installed the latested package of the K-Lite codec - while installing K-Lite prompted if I would like the un-install the DivX codecs as the same were being provided by K-Lite to. Fine - since I had read a detalied article that the problem of explorer crashing could be attributed to a corrupt xVid Codec which happens to be a part of DivX package as well as K-Lite.

So I happily unistalled the DivX one and installed the complete K-LIte package and re-started my machine. All things are fixed now and even ThumbNails come up fine.

Well, the trick seems to be in installing the latest K-Lite Codec package to fix this issue and removing all the confilicting codecs from your machine. Hope this info helps all those who are struck with this problem.

iphone is now officially available in India

The iphone has taken more than a year to be finally available across the counter in India. Though the iphone was illegally available in India for quite sometime now - but as predicted in my article way back in May, it's released by Airtel.

It will soon be available on Vodafone too. But the prices quoted by Airtel seem to be really off the mark - Rs. 31k for a 8GB model and Rs. 36k for a 16GB iphone 3G is simply "NO VALUE FOR MONEY". The iphone has so many drawbacks and yet it is so highly priced for all the hype that is created. I read that Airtel has said it has had too many bookings and it will be difficult for it's dealers to keep pace.

Com'on folks why should one be so dumb to take a product that is almost double the price for the features. There are simply superb phones with much better camera and other features from Sony Ericcson, Nokia, HTC and others. The very high end phones are only priced at Rs. 30k+ from these market leaders and I do agree with their prices on that.

Most high end phones now sport a 5MP camera, a large memory which can be expanded and made much larger, WiFi support, full screen browser, in-built GPS, etc. Most of the above features simply don't exist in the current iphone 3G and yet it is priced so high!! The iphone for once lacks a decent camera, no bluetooth support for transfering files, the list simply goes on.... All that it has is a very intutive interface, multi-touch sensitive screen, motion detection to tilt screen accordingly.

I am sure we'll have the second hand ones hit the market soon for atleast 50% of the original price. Let's wait and watch.

AIMP :: A Free and Powerful Windows Audio Player

AIMP is a Free and Powerful audio player that allows you to listen to your favorite music with an outstanding sound quality!! Its appearance resembles that of the good old classical audio player (Winamp), so you'll get used to it very quickly.

It also has features that let you to be customized with skins. The program includes a 18-band equalizer, a visualization window to display rhythmic visual effects and a playlist editor to organize your audio files.

One cool feature I found is the nice fading effect that makes your list of songs look like an endless music loop and a handy volume normalizing feature avoids drastic volume changes between tracks. Also, the player's main functions can be conveniently controlled by global hotkeys.

Besides playing music, AIMP Classic features three extra utilities which also enable you to record any sound on your computer, convert audio files from one format to another and view or edit tags. AIMP Classic is based on the well-known audio engine BASS, so it's easy to connect new plug-ins (from the plug-in library included in the program) and expand the player's functionalities.

P.S: At the time of posting this article, the official website of AIMP was down. You can download AIMP via FreeWareFiles.

Apple's iPhone is finally out!!

Apple's eagerly awaited and (grossly) over-hyped iPhone has finally arrived as promised on the 29th of June, 2007. Love it or hate it, but you can't ignore it. The iPhone will hit Indian shores in early 2008 though, insiders say that it could be as early as as November 2007.

Unofficially though, you can get the iPhone pretty soon from the grey markets of National Bazar or Majestic Area in Bangalore for around Rs. 30,000. Since the phone is locked i.e. Apple has tied up for an exclusive tie up with AT&T, you can get it unlocked for anything between Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1,500 to make it work with any GSM network in India.

Needless to say, entertainment companies have come out with special iPhone ready trailers and movies. A wide collection of downloadable media items.

The large screen of the iPhone means you can thoroughly enjoy videos/movies and hopefully this one factor should itself drive sales here in India. I for one just can't wait to get my hands on the iPhone. The phone it too cool to be ignored. Do let me know what you think about the iPhone, whether you would buy one or not and more importantly, what would you do with the awesome multimedia capabilities of the iPhone in the comments.

Search and Download DRM Free Mp3 Songs easily using SkreemR

SkreemR is a search engine specialized in the searching for DRM Free audio online and specifically Mp3 files. Just you need to key in the word of the album or the artist or just the song title which we wish to find and immediately a huge list of songs along with the direct links to download them for free.

Moreover thanks to the Flash Player embedded into the site - it is possible to listen to the song directly from the search results before we download it. I guess it's a very cool service and useful too.

Movavi Online :: Free Video Conversion service Online

I had earlier talked about the Movavi Video Suite, looks like the folks at Movavi have come up with a better product now - A Free Online Video Convertor called Movavi Online.

It is one beautiful and useful web application for you to convert the video. It is a free service that allows you to convert video's from the following formats (DivX, XVid), MPEG (1, 2, 4), MP4, 3gp, 3gp2, WMV, MOV (QT) to the following formats (XVid), MPEG-4, MPEG-2 (DVD Quality, PAL), MPEG-2 (DVD Quality, NTSC), iPod video, iPod 5G video, PSP video, 3gp, 3gp2, MPEG-4 (.mov), Flash (.flv).

The cool feature is that you can add up to 5 files limited to 10 min each and 100 Mb total size. I guess the site has the fastest online conversion and without too much of advertisements(or NO ads right now). But the pain point is that you need to give your email and a notification is sent to you when your converted video is ready for download.

Once you receive the link for the download in your mail - you will have 24 hours of time in order to unload your video, after that the converted video is automatically deleted from the server.

YamiPod a iTunes Freeware Alternative :: A good iPod Manager

YamiPod is a freeware application to efficiently manage your iPod. It can be run directly from your iPod and needs no installation.

The cool thing is that it also has extra features such as rss news and podcast support, remove duplicates, easy notes editor (with multipage support), songs synchronization, playlists export and much more. It has also been translated in 12 languages.

So what's stopping you to be struck with iTunes(except if you always use the Online Store).

YouTube will curb Copyright Infringement by using a new Video Identification System

YouTube plans to launch a video identification system that will help it curb copyrighted material from being uploaded. It is reported that tests will begin initially with Walt Disney and Time Warner.

In about a month, YouTube will start using clips supplied by Walt Disney and Time Warner to identify unique characteristics within clips posted by users. If a match is found, the content owner will be alerted. The companies that own the copyright can decide to either remove the content, or leave it up and get a cut of the advertising revenue gained from ads appearing around the video. The technology could eventually be used to block the uploading of copyrighted clips if the studio desires.

Meanwhile, YouTube brought more lawsuits - Viacom suing the search giant for publishing videos without authorization and requiring $1 billion in damages. The announcement was made just after the MTV owner demanded the removal of 100.000 clips from the official page.

So be careful the next time you try to upload a Copyrighted video on YouTube - Big Brother's watching.

K-Lite Codec Pack gets an update 3.2

I had previously written about how you can Play any Video or Audio file in your Windows XP / Vista with K-Lite Codec Pack. Well, yesterday there was an update to this package and a new version 3.2.0 was realeased. You can get the latest version here.

Here's what the developers have to say about it. If you need a review and the list of formats it supports, do check my previous article.

K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of VFW/ACM codecs, DirectShow filters and tools. Codecs and DirectShow filters are needed for encoding and decoding (playing) audio and video formats. The K-Lite Codec Pack is designed as a user-friendly solution for playing all your movie files. With the K-Lite Codec Pack you should be able to play all the popular audio and video formats and even several less common formats.

The K-Lite Codec Pack has a couple of major advantages compared to other codec packs:

  • It it always very up-to-date with the newest and/or best components.
  • All components have been carefully selected. It is not just a random bunch of stuff thrown together.
  • It is very user-friendly and easy to use.
  • The installation is fully customizable, meaning that you are able to only install those components that you really want.
  • For some formats a choice can be made during installation between different filters. This allows you to tweak the pack to your own specific needs and preferences.
  • Uninstallation removes everything that was installed by the pack. Including all registry keys.
  • It is extremely easy to make a fully customized unattended installation with the integrated wizard.
  • It has been very well tested. The pack doesn't contain any conflicting or buggy codecs.
  • It tries to avoid potential conflicts with other codecs already installed on your computer.
  • The pack is able to detect broken codecs and filters on your system, and helps you to removes them.
  • It is a very complete package, containing everything you need to play your movies.
  • This pack has a huge user base. This means that problems are found and resolved quickly.
  • There are different packages. From small to extra-large.
  • Suitable for both novice and expert users.

How to easily play MP3 files in (K)Ubuntu Installations

After some searching, I've found the fix to repair or install MP3 support in (K)Ubuntu distributions. It is actually a pretty simple process. Please follow the instructions below exactly:
  • Close your favorite player (Amarok, Juk, etc)
  • Delete the .xine folder from your home directory. Beware that the folder is hidden and you must first activate the 'Show Hidden Files' option in your file manager.
  • Open your audio player and enjoy all your MP3 music files.

Please Note: This will also fix the problem with the thumbnail generation of your video files in Konqueror.

The above fix is for systems with MP3 support already installed, but I think it's a good idea to let everyone know that Ubuntu doesn't ship with MP3 support and to fix this problem as well, follow the instructions below:

For Kubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft)
  • Open Amarok and play an MP3 file. Amarok will ask if you would like to add MP3 support.
  • Open Synaptic Package Manager and install the libxine-extracodecs package.

For Kubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn)
  • Open Synaptic Package Manager, search and install the package libxine1-ffmpeg.

Be advised that in Kubuntu 7.04 there is also a new package that contains some restricted software (Flash 9, JRE 6, Gstreamer Ugly plugins etc) called ubuntu-restricted-extras. You can install this package as well.

How to easily remove your Account Name from iTunes Songs you purchased

When you purchase music off iTunes, your account information is embedded into the music files. You can see the information in the tracks you purchase.

So here's how you can easily remove all that information from the tracks you have purchased on iTunes.

  • Click Edit -> Preferences:
  • In the following screen. Click on the tab Advanced -> Importing
  • We'll be modifying the 'Import Using' and the 'Setting' settings.
  • For Import Using, select 'AAC Encoder' from the drop down list.
  • For Setting, select Custom.
  • This window will then jump out at you, select 256 kbps from the Stereo Bit Rate drop down. Now you are with the hard bit.
  • (once you've done this once, you don't need to do it again [unless you change the settings])
Now to convert the song and remove all the info!
  • This is the easy part, simply right click on the iTunes Plus song and select 'Convert Selection to AAC'
  • TIP: Hold down CTRL (or Apple key) and select multiple songs before converting. It'll do them all at once.
  • You'll then see a handy converting page in your sources list on the left. It should only be a few seconds per song if you have a reasonably fast computer.
  • And then a few seconds later, you have a second - identical quality song with no account information!
  • To check that theres no account info, right click the song and select 'Get Info'.
  • You can see the account information is gone!
I hope this helps you all in getting rid of the account information. I'm sure there are other ways, but this is easy and realatively user friendly method that I found.
