A large numbers of women and children wearing multi-colored miniskirts and tight leggings congregated in central Jakarta on Sunday, raged by a public officer’s remarks that insultingly dressed women are to hold responsible for sexual stabbings.
The demonstrate was in reaction to comments by the Indonesian capital city's governor Fauzi Bowo, who said on Friday that women must not wear enlightening dresses to prevent being raped or mistreated.
He instantly expressed regret, but his remarks were made public extensively via local media and Twitter.
The gathering called on police and the Indonesian government to do substantial to secure women and help the sufferers of sexual attack.
Women carried placards saying "Don't inform us how to clothing, tell them not to rape," and "My body is not porn, in its place it's your filthy thinking."
"Public officers should remain quiet sooner than making unfair announcements against women. They are purported to be sensitive and it is their duty to find actual solution to hostility against women," said Tunggal Prawestu, a spokeswoman for the protest planners.
Prior this month a woman was gang-raped in a minivan, a broadly used type of public transport, late at night. As per available information from Indonesia's National Commission for Women's Affairs, there have been in excess of 100,000 cases of abuse against women until now this year, of which approximately 4% were rape cases.
This year, cities around the Globe have observed 'SlutWalk' rallies, largely-female complaints against sexual abuse.
While most Indonesians carry out a moderate shape of Islam, fundamentalists have been pushing grave to impose harder Islamic laws. In 2008, an anti-pornography law was approved to ban public displays of nudity and "behavior that could inflame desire."
