Birthday Message #5

Today is my sister's-in-law
VANESSA'S
30th birthday!

Although after 16 years, she feels more like a biological sister!
We have shared with each other the ups and downs of life.
We have experienced highs and lows with each other.
I have laughed with her,
cried with her
and relied on her more than I can count.

She has been my friend.
One of my best friends for half of her life!
(Her life, because...she is younger than me.)

There has been a lot of:

crafting,
shopping,
meal sharing,
diaper changing,
"are you thinking what I'm thinking" glancing,
chocolate indulging,
wine drinking,
secret telling,
note writing,
creating,
exercising,
parent advising,
relationship relating,
telephone conversating,
photo taking,
silence breaking,
apologizing,
news relaying,
memory making,
gift exchanging,
hug offering,
idea giving,
outfit complimenting,
tear wiping,
nonsensical giggling
spiritual growing,
recipe sharing,
dream expressing,
confiding,
and life celebrating
moments!

I look forward to making more!!

Happy 30th!
Love ya sis!

Those born on leap-year day celebrate today

FENWICK ISLAND -- Here's a quick math question: How can a father be the same age as his 14-year-old daughter, who turns 15 a day later?

Answer: The father was born on leap-year day, Feb. 29, 60 years earlier, and his 15-year-old daughter's birthday is March 1. Think that sounds like a purely hypothetical? Think again.

Eight years ago, that's exactly what happened to Bob Buckler of Fenwick Island. Buckler was born Feb. 29, 1944, but is celebrating his 17th birthday today. He's a member of an exclusive club of leap-year day babies.

"I like it," Buckler said of having a quadrennial birthday. "I expect people to remember it, but I don't do anything huge. As a kid I enjoyed it, (because) it made me seem different.""I like it," Buckler said of having a quadrennial birthday. "I expect people to remember it, but I don't do anything huge. As a kid I enjoyed it, (because) it made me seem different."

According to the Honor Society of Leap Year Day Babies, statistically speaking, one in every 1,461 people should have a Feb. 29 birthday. The society estimates there are 200,000 leap-year day babies in the United States and 5 million worldwide.

Leap-year day doesn't just have significance for those who were born that day. Salaried employees who are paid based on a 365-day year work for free today.

For many leap-year day babies, the novelty is more for others than for themselves, said William Crompton, a 37- (or 9-) year-old from New York.

"My friends and family always insist on doing something when it comes around," Crompton said. "I don't really celebrate it. I feel like most people who would have a leap day birthday are probably like 'whatever' about it."

Some computerized databases -- like those used by insurance companies -- don't have Feb. 29 as a choice when potential customers need to fill out their birthday, but Crompton said the only confusion he's ever encountered because of his birthday came at bars.

"Turning 21 was ridiculous because, well, bouncers aren't the brightest of people so they thought it was a fake ID," Crompton said. "I've never had any problems other than that."

The persistent dilemma for any leap-year day baby is when to celebrate birthdays during the non-leap years. The Honor Society claims 80 percent of leap-year day babies celebrate their off-year birthdays on Feb. 28.

Buckler said that once you get to a certain age, you enjoy the leap-year day birthdays because, frankly, you don't have as many.

"When you get to be 68, you don't want to remember your birthdays," he said. "But it's nice because people will always send me a card who otherwise wouldn't talk to me, and I get a kick out of that."

A Happy Heart on Halloween!

Happy Halloween!

I thought I’d share a few last minute ideas from the weekend.

My stepdaughter Trinity turns 10 this week, so we had cake and ice cream with the family yesterday.

I made her this quick banner using scrapbook supplies.

She loves chocolate cake, so I used a store bought recipe and decided to turn her cake into a spider cake.
My hubby was home, so I made him a yummy little sundae with the left over cake pieces!
Then afterwards the kids made haunted houses out of milk cartons.
The best part was when my brother handed Trinity her jar of fish as part of her gift, her laughter turned to tears of happiness.
She is such a sweetie.

It ended up being a pretty busy day, because we also had a photographer come out for our family pictures, but somehow we fit  everything in, including time to make caramel apples!
No matter how crazy it gets with the holidays and birthday parties, I always end the day with sore feet, but with a happy heart...
because together truly is the best place to be!

Tonight we are making hot dog mummies and then we’ll head out to Trick or Treat.

Hoping you have a SPOOKtacular night ya’ll!

(Sorry I had to fit in a little silly Halloween word in somewhere :)

The Brighter the Better

I have finished Jocelyn's birthday party invitations!
They came out pretty cute, if I don't say so myself.
Although, I am certain that having a picture of one
fabulous little girl on the cover helped!

Last night the girls and I stayed up working on some decorations
for the party. Trinity says crafting is no joke! ;)

I also decided to add a fresh coat of paint to a few items in the back yard.

...birthday decorations, picking out furniture color,
or just our outlook on our life,
I say...
the brighter the better.

& speaking of brighter,
The girls had another day out with their cousins
and a sleepover this week.
It is so wonderful to have family nearby.
Our kids get so happy when they see each other.
When Jocelyn spotted her cousins from across the parking lot
she jumped out of the car and started yelling to get their attention,
you would have thought
she had won a trip to Disneyland!
I love that our kiddos are so close.

Max Turns 1

Max woke up this morning to red, blue, yellow and green balloons tied all around his cot.  This is sort of a little tradition in our household.  Lots of balloons on Birthdays that is.  He absolutely loved them.  However, I think he loved his new car even more.  And I think Harry loved it even more than Max!  It's been a perfect First Birthday.

Plans That Didn't Work Out & Other Blessings

This weekend, my husband and I were planning a slumber party for our daughter Trinity’s birthday. On Friday, I went to the store for the food and gifts, prepared the ornament crafts and put the candy bags together. Jocelyn and I stayed up late drinking hot cocoa, listening to Christmas music and wrapping individual smores for the party.

A few hours after going to bed on Friday, I woke up feeling terrible. On Saturday, my hubby and Jocelyn completed the remaining chores for me. They cleaned up the kitchen, baked the cupcakes and helped me decorate when I finally made it out of bed. I knew that I wasn't going to be much help, but I was hopeful that we would still be able to pull it off! Unfortunately, a few hours later my husband started feeling just as sick. We decided to cancel the slumber party. We knew that there was no way we could care for, feed and hike the mountain with ten girls!
We managed to pick Trinity up and drive over to my parents' house to sing to Happy Birthday to both dad and Trinity. My husband didn't make it and slept in one of the bedrooms during the dinner and gift opening, and I barely moved from my spot on the sofa. The girls did get invited to spend the night at their cousins’ house so things still worked
out for them.

Yesterday, while my husband finished up some of the chores, I was thinking about how lucky I am.  I have a husband who willingly picks up where I leave off. Had he not gotten sick, he would have been happy to assume all responsibilities for the party and would have gladly taken the girls on the hike alone the next day.
I knew how disappointed our daughters and nieces were going to be when they found out the the party was canceled. Then a few hours later, I felt so blessed,  because my brother Ernie and sis-in-law Vanessa offered to take our girls home so that they could still have a fun night.
When I picked the girls up they were tired, but were happily  sharing stories about the fun they had. The best part is that in four days they will get to have that fun all over again on Thanksgiving. A holiday that is designed for families to come together to focus on their blessings. However, if we are wise, we are grateful for these things everyday, all year long!

It was raining just before I left to pick the girls up and on my way I came across a rainbow. Rainbows are my absolute favorite miracle! I never get tired of sharing the fact that years ago, I went through the end of one with my grandma. Because of that experience, I always look at the rainbow as a very spiritual reminder of how blessed I am.
It is not hard to find blessings. In moments of sickness when nothing seems to go as planned, we can find them. During the months that we are scrambling to pay the bills, we can find them. When we are having relationship difficulties with spouses or other family members, we can find them.

Plans do "have a way of falling down in midflight" and life doesn't always work out exactly the way we hope, but it does work out. Whenever I am in need of a reminder to show me just how blessed I am, I don't have to look very hard to find one. In fact, most days I just open my eyes and one is laying next to me in bed.

Today I am linking up with Julie for Marriage Mondays.

Staying Connected

 It is Sunday morning.
I am on the computer writing.
My husband is in the gym room making work calls.
Our girls are in the living room watching Sunday morning cartoons.
Our son is upstairs asleep.
We are all disconnected, for the moment.
We are under the same roof, but each of us is doing our own thing.
Just waking up and getting ready to start the day.
This is a lazy Sunday.
Usually, we are up early picking up two of the kids from their mom’s house before we head to church.
Today, my husband is working from home.
Soon, I will run to the grocery store.

Since, it is a day off for the kids, the girls will probably play in their bedrooms most of the day and our son will stay hooked up to his video games.
This evening, we will tell the kids that the weather is finally cool enough to take them on that hike on the mountain that we have been promising them.
When we get to the top of the mountain, we will spread out a blanket, eat some dinner, pull out a surprise birthday cake, and sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to our daughter.
We will have accomplished a small feat, prayed, shared a meal, looked down at the world below admiring it's beauty, and cherished a loved one...
together.
As the sun disappears, we will walk down the mountain, feeling connected, once again.

Thank you, Lord, for giving me yet another day, to spend loving my husband and children.
Amen

Happy Times

My beautiful dad.

The beach houses surrounding the house we stayed in. The agapanthus grows wild in front of these houses. I would love to see them flowering.

The gardens in this small sleepy beach side town are to-die-for.

Table set for Dad's Birthday lunch.

I spotted this cute beach shack when I was out picking flowers and loved it. In New Zealand I've noticed they paint many of their houses black and white which I love.

I had a bath in this huge clawfoot bath every day we were there. I love the little vintage butterfly prints on the wall.

When we eventually renovate the kitchen in our new house I definitely want to have a cabinet built just like this one which was in the kitchen at the beach house. It was so perfect for all the plates, platters, cups etc.

The beach in front of the house.

We've just returned home from a week in New Zealand where we celebrated my father's 60th Birthday. After spending a few days in Auckland we caught a plane down to Napier and drove down to a beautiful beach house my parent's have been frequenting over the past 12 months in a sleepy beach side town in Hawkes Bay. We spent 3 days here with my parents, brothers, cousins, aunty & uncle and our grandmother. It was the most wonderful holiday with lots of laughs, lots of tears and lots of reminiscing. Mum cooked an amazing lunch for Dad on his birthday. I went down the street and picked some gorgeous roadside flowers which I arranged for the table. It was the most amazing week away from work and the craziness of life. Happy 60th Birthday Dad. You are one in a million and we all love you so much.
