Waiting for Direction from my GPS (Great Protector of my Soul)

Yesterday, a door closed.

I was bummed.
I have been working towards a goal for a few weeks now,
but up to this point, it hasn’t been easy
and it hasn’t happened the way I hoped.
The circumstances are out of my control,
so I was a little disappointed.
To look forward to something eagerly
and then to find out it's not happening,
my way
can be discouraging.

This whole
 "change of plans"
thing
has happened quite a bit in my life.
I like to be organized, know what’s happening in my future, and plan ahead...
but many times,
God reminds me that He already has different plans for me.
He tweaks my schedule and thought process on a daily basis.

In fact this morning,
as I was on a hike listening to my iPod,
after about 45 minutes worth of music,
Halo, by Beyonce came on.
Halfway through the song there was a loud pop in my ear
and my iPod shut off.
The last words I heard were loud and clear,

“You know you’re my saving grace,
You’re everything I need and more.”

Perhaps it was a reminder,
God was reminding me to not get discouraged,
He is at work!
We are on the path that He wants us on.

It was like that moment
when we are using our
GPS,
(Global Positioning System)
to go somewhere new
and it tells us to turn on the next street,
but somehow we make a wrong turn.
So the GPS system has to reroute...
wait...
wait...
wait...
done!
After some waiting, the new directions are ready,
so we are free to go happily on our way.

Well, I feel like that is where I am in my life.
I am waiting for new direction
from my other GPS
(Great Protector of my Soul)
J

Each time that I make a wrong turn,
He does something to interrupt my plans
to put me back on the path that He wants me on.
Currently,
He is telling me
wait...
wait...
wait...
be patient and wait.

That phone call yesterday was disappointing,
however, God’s plans for my life never are.
I’m sure that
whatever comes next,
whatever He has in store for us,
will be great.

So meanwhile,
I’ll just keep moving along,
living, loving, learning and
waiting for His instructions.

The Girl in the Mirror

As I sit here at my desk going through many of my old journal entries, poems and letters to God.

I am so amazed. The girl in the mirror has not changed a whole lot, but the girl inside has changed tremendously!

At 17, I wrote, "I know that there is someone out there for everyone, including me. It might take a little longer than I hope for, or a few more heartaches than I want, but I am sure in the end it will be worth it. Maybe it's not right to give up, maybe it's just best if I move on."

I continued to read the things I wrote at 21, 24, 28, and 31…
There was a trend. I was always talking about a struggle, but I ended my journals with a bit of positivity about the future. I always remained hopeful.

My journal entries were about many different things that I was experiencing at those times in my life. I wrote about social issues and things that concerned my relationships with friends and family. I often wrote about my faith or whatever personal battle I was facing. I also wrote about small miracles that affected my life. However, the majority of my paperwork was written about love. Ah! Such a hopeless romantic, I was. Although, if you know me, you know that I still am.

I love, love.

I still find myself lost in thought. Lost in the beauty of what is and the beauty that could be. The beauty of life that is.

I am always thinking about the future and what tomorrow may bring. Like the girl in those journal entries, I remain hopeful. Although these days, the difference that I see when I compare the two is that I am not lacking when it comes to appreciating what I have at this very moment.

In my younger years, I did.

Luckily, I have been able to break free from those habits. From the outlook that kept me searching for happiness and looking for how things could improve. They were holding me back from appreciating all of the wonderful things that I had in my life at that time.

I was so focused on the problems that I was experiencing, instead of looking for all of the things that were good, and I missed some of the beautiful moments.

It took one life changing experience to move me.

It taught me to look inside myself a little more, to be the kind of person that God desires me to be.

Now, my life is good.

Not that things are perfect, nor will every day be hunky dory and full of glory,
but they are good, because happiness is a choice.

As I continued reading I found this entry that I wrote last year, at 33, "There will be many times that we will feel weak and in need of a hero, but whether we have found ourselves an earthly hero or not, we must always remember that we already have a heavenly one! One who has promised us many things."

I realized that “that girl” finally found what she was searching for.

I never had a problem loving myself, but I was always searching for someone that would love “the me” that I loved.
I finally realized that there was already someone out there who loved me, as much as, if not more than I could ever love myself. God loved me and He had already given me so many gifts. Gifts that I was neglecting to see.

Because of His love, I was finally able to stop searching for "happiness".
I have many interests and plenty of dreams and goals for myself. I will never stop trying new things, or lose my “hope” that great things can happen.

But He has taught me that while it is okay to be excited about what my future may hold, I must never lose sight of what great things my present contains!

20 years from now when I am looking back at how the girl in the mirror has changed, I hope that my appreciation for the Lord's blessings is something that will remain the same.

16: (3 ways I witnessed happiness)-my kids were on vacation & I enjoyed our time, bible study was beautiful, laying in bed face to face talking to my hubby about our day

17: (1 gift that made me laugh/pray/quiet)-found a craft to do with my girls, something i felt disappointed about turned out okay in the end, a busy day full of fun and loved one's that made me tired
18: (gifts from God)- our girls made honor roll & principals lists again and I am blessed with healthy, smart girls
19: (a grace in the kitchen/weather/that might have never been) the bible on my counter, nice weather permitting me to go on walks, a new friendship
20: (3 gifts you saw close up) my grandmother's smile, my daughter's excitement, truth in "her" actions
21: (1 thing in the sky/memory/ugly) the video my hubby sent me of our proposal, meeting him for the first time, thoughts of what I wish I could have done differently with her, but the growth that resulted from it
22: (1 grace wrinkled/smoothed/unfolded) the lines around "his" eyes that reminds me how hard he works, the cream on my bathroom counter, the clothes my SS forgot in the dryer that I folded for him

Choose Happiness

Gratitude...
It's a BIG expectation in my home!
Sometimes it is easy to mumble and grumble about things.
It’s hard to be content in every situation,
and yet,
there is always
something to be happy about!
Today, I was reminded
that while many things in life may be out of our control,
our attitude is not one of them.
Today friends,
is just another opportunity to
ChOOSE happiness!

Frazzled, but Grateful

Frazzled.

It would be the perfect word for me this morning.
The time changed in many other states over the weekend, but not here in Arizona.
And yet, for some reason my phone decided to change the time on me.
As my daughter and I were sitting down to eat breakfast she glanced at the clock and said,
"IT'S 9:00!"
Oops.
So we grabbed our sweaters, hopped in the car and left.
With a bed head full of frizzy hair, wearing my lovely pj's,
I had to sign her in late for the first time this year.
What a treat I must have been for the office and other late parents. :)

I'm grateful though.
It's definitely another word I would use to describe myself today.
My husband comes home tonight!
He has been out of town since Friday and I sure do miss him when he's gone.
The other day as I was listening to the radio this song came on.

It reminded me of my love.
Relationships are so wonderful when the other person inspires you!
My husband definitely does that.
He inspires me to do the things I used to do,
but lost somewhere along the way.
He inspires me to be who I want to be,
and sometimes...more.
This is going to be a great day,
even if I got off to a late start.
It is a day full of possibility!
I have a very important appointment today,
that could be life changing.

I Feel Sun-shiny

I have never had the urge to divulge
every
little
detail
about my life.
But,
I DO
enjoy sharing my
happiness
and I am especially
passionate
when it comes to sharing
what comes after.

You know!
The rainbow AFTER the rain.

I live for
those moments,
when the sunshine peeks through the clouds!

And how could I not?

There is so much joy in
knowing
that God is working in my life,
and to witness Him working in the lives of my loved ones.

This past month,
another
prayer was answered.
Actually, a few prayers have been,
but one prayer/need met in particular
just moves me.

God continues to work
miracles
in my life,
and I can't express how
grateful
I am.

I am feeling
awfully
sun-shiny
today!

Clinging to Faith

Isn’t life amazing? It is full of trials, but it is also full of blessings!
The other day I met with a friend who was so transparent and honest about some of the pain that she has been dealing with, and yet, in the midst of her pain she has been able to find her blessings!
It seems as though there is always someone hurting. Our prayers are filled with requests for loved one’s health, financial stresses, marriages and/or relationships.

There are so many people to pray for, so many in a crisis.
In fact, we are all constantly dealing with our own struggles, little daily obstacles that test our patience and our character and/or major hardships that affect our life.

We can be certain that there is always someone going through a difficult time, and yet have you noticed that some people never show any signs of struggle? We never even realize that they are hurting, because they do it with such poise.

Why are some people able to get through the difficult times without becoming self-destructive, falling into a depression or without taking their anger out on others?

I believe it is by the Grace of God.

They are clinging to their faith!

They are choosing to put their trust in God.

It is so inspiring!

It is easy to get lost in our emotions, but what I have found is that what gets us past our pain is the ability to take our focus off our hurts and to put our focus on God and others. To focus on the fact that He has a plan and that He is silently working in us and in others to get us to where we need to be.

All we have to do is TRUST HIM.
Trust that the Lord has great things in store for us.

Trust that these struggles are building and enhancing character.
That the hardships are necessary to help us evolve into that person that God desires us to be.

We know that the Lord has not promised us an easy life, but He has promised forever for the righteous in heart. He has promised that if we forgive, we will be forgiven. He has promised that His love never fails.

How wonderful that even in the midst of turmoil, we still have so much to be grateful for.

Linking up with

Marriage Maintenance

A few days ago as I was sitting in the school’s parking lot our truck suddenly started shaking and the check engine light came on. I quickly dropped the kids off and headed home to tell my husband what was happening.
It was a short distance, but it felt like forever. The car felt like it was stalling and even though I was pushing on the gas pedal it was driving slower than usual.

It is a funny thing about those vehicles, when they need attention, they need attention. However, it is not an occasional thing. Vehicles need constant maintenance. It turned out that a part had gone bad and it needed to be replaced. Without that specific part, that one component, our truck would stop working altogether.
When we keep up with the simple things like oil changes, tire rotations and even putting gas in the car, we help to prevent much bigger issues later, like blowing a head gasket, a tire, or running out of fuel on the highway!
Marriages require constant maintenance too.
Maintenance: actions performed to keep a machine or system functioning or in service
Communication, working together, doing kind things for each other, being honest and considerate in all circumstances helps keep the marriage working properly.
Different components are needed in a relationship to ensure that it is running “smoothly,” and if we neglect the routine maintenance, those components will suffer because of it.
Respect, love, compassion, commitment, romance, Christ…
Our marriages require these.

My husband and I have not had much time for each other, since both of the girls have been sick. The kids have needed most of our attention and even in the evening when we usually wind down together, we had not been able to. Our little sickies had us sleeping apart the last few nights.
Because of this and few other things going on at home, we have been tired, stressed and little irritable.
Yesterday, while the vehicle was at the dealership getting work done, my husband worked from home. When I got back from the field trip, I drove him to the dealership to pick up the truck. On the way back, as I was following behind him he kept looking in his driver side mirror acting like he was a stranger flirting with me.
He raised his eyebrows, put his hand to his ear, and acted as if he was telling me to call him. I have had him do this to me dozens of times, but it never gets old. He makes me laugh and I love that he flirts with me and takes the time to romance me.
A little romance was definitely needed after the week we have had. Although, a little romance is always needed and appreciated!
After we had gone to bed, I heard a knock on the door, and I laid there for a minute. I had started feeling a little sick a few hours before and did not want to get out of bed. It was the 6th night in a row that our sleep was interrupted because the girls woke up not feeling well, and to be honest, I was completely exhausted.

After a second knock, my husband did not budge. I know he hears it, because the brat groans a little when his sleep is disturbed. So, I got up anyway. I am always the one to get up and tend to the kids in the middle of the night.
Respect.

It is maintenance. I choose to be respectful of the fact that he has to get up earlier than us and head to work. He has a tough job and he needs sleep and a clear head to do what he does during the day.
There are marriages where the women feel they “make their men carry their weight” by asking him to wake up and care for the kids at night, because they are up with them all day. There are also other families where both the mother and the father work outside of the home and so the parents take turns.
We each do what works for us. However, even when I was working full-time I didn't take that route. I've always considered homemaking as my job and caring for the children as part of that.
When Jocelyn was a baby, I would wake up with her and carry her to the rocker in the living room to soothe her to sleep so that my husband could get enough rest for work.
These days I do the same thing. When the kids wake, I wake with them. He could. I could nudge him and say ‘hey, I haven’t had a full nights rest in a week and I could use it’, and I am sure he would help, but I choose not to. He works out of the home and I work in the home, and I feel this comes with the territory.
After reading a post on The 5 C's of a Successful Marriage, I was reminded that Compassion is one of the components needed in a marriage. It reminded me of something else I have recently started doing for my husband, and I must say, I am very proud of myself, because I really do not enjoy it at all! I have started ironing my husband’s work clothes before I hang them up. I have never done that. I wash, fold, and hang, but I used to only iron before I was about to wear something.
However, my husband really dislikes ironing before he heads out to work. So I have decided to save him some time and iron the pants and shirts that come out of the drier wrinkly for him before I hang them up. I feel good about it too, because I am doing a little something to make the man I love's life a little easier. It is a gift.
I believe that the role that the woman plays in the marriage is so important and that even the smallest, most mundane task, matters.
It may sound a little old fashioned, but I am okay with that!
Our marriage takes priority and we both do our part in this marriage. My husband does so much for our family and so these are a few of the small things that I do for ‘us.’
Marriage is a give and take. It is a “system” that needs routine maintenance to keep it in good shape and I am happy to do my part.

Project 31: My Virtue, My Focus

Today is day 9 and I am asked:
What virtues do you value in yourself?

....

As I took a moment to think about this question,
I found myself feeling a little insecure. I was tempted to not post for this day. Why?
Because the post is all about liking...me.

Yesterday was about me. Days 2, 4, 6 and 8 were all about me, and now I have to write about me again?

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it.

Isn't talking about myself this frequently a little
narcissistic and boring?

I have those people in my life that have no problem talking about themselves, but they are interesting.

I'm...just...me.

It is easy for me to talk about things that I find inspirational! To share the things that God has placed into my heart. To share the blessings that I have in my life. It is easy to write about my children, my husband, and projects that I am working on at the house.

But to post about what I like about myself?!
That is insanity, scary, hard!

In fact, I skipped Day 6 because the world's definition of beauty has jaded me and I sometimes don't feel good enough.

It is easier not to talk about the wrong, and so, I did what I always (well almost) always do. I eliminated the negative, the hard stuff, and I focused on the positive.

And I realized, THAT is what I like about me.

I like that I focus on the good stuff. I like that even when I have problems with family, finances, children, and health, I focus on what is positive.

I am not saying that I do not have sad moments. I am not saying that I do not try to "fix" certain issues, but no matter what happens, I always move on, I always get over it, and I always forgive.

I know that this life has too much happiness available to focus on the hurts.

Everything that I had gone through in my previous marriage is the past. Occasionally something will come up and I am like oh my goodness, I dealt with that! But ya know what? I forgot all about it, because I chose to let it go and forgive.

The things that come up in my current marriage can be difficult some days. I could blog about all the issues that arise with blended families and all of the outside factors that affect us, and friends, sometimes I am tempted to, but I don't! I just pray about it, look at things from another's perspective and focus on the good.

Sometimes, I get to a point where I feel like I have done all I can do, and I say, "I'm done, that's all. No more."

BUT

In my heart, I know I am not.

I am full of compassion, empathy and forgiveness. I care too much to quit.

It is my strength and my weakness. I know it is. According to my hubby, it means I sometimes allow people to walk all over me. It means that sometimes, I excuse poor behavior from others. It means that sometimes I spoil our children.

I have thought about this many times and I have come to a conclusion,
I would rather be giving away too much love and forgiveness, than not enough.

I focus on the good stuff.

That is what I value about me.

When Life Gives You Lemons...

Yesterday, when I picked the girls up from school they had a hard time finding their positives for the day. I was a little bummed, because we have been talking about how each day has something wonderful to offer for a few weeks now.

Later when the girls and I took our dog on a walk after school we passed a neighbor who was giving away free lemons.

Free lemons? Score!

We decided to take a bag home and make some lemonade.
This was the first time the girls made homemade lemonade and they really enjoyed it.

Trinity doubled her recipe, because she thought it was so delicious. Jocelyn spent more time creating herself a new friend named, "Lemony." :o) Then the entire family enjoyed a glass during dinner.

Yesterday, turned out to be the perfect example of an ordinary day turned
extraordinary.

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!

Encouraging Positive Thinking and Gratitude at Home

One of the things that I am constantly trying to teach our children is to be grateful. Thankfulness and positivity has become an important message in our house.

What I do not want is…

For our children to be influenced by people who look at things in a negative light.
For our children to feel entitled or superior.
For our children to focus on the things that do not really matter in life.

What I do want is…

For our children to focus on the good, even when their circumstances seem tough.
For our children to feel fortunate to have all that they do and to realize that they have everything that they need.
For our children to focus on loving God, loving themselves and loving others.

We all get bummed out or frustrated about things, but we have the choice to let things go and focus on the positive. It is easy to get down about things. I know I have been there, but I try hard to keep the negative thoughts away. I want our children to be aware and fight the negativity as well.

Negativity can affect our physical and mental health. When we feel sorry for ourselves, we get depressed easily. When we think the world owes us something, we are often unhappy with the outcome.

I have been pushing the happy thoughts on my children more then ever these past few weeks. I am making an effort to remember to use every opportunity available as a teaching moment to find a positive for them to focus on.

Last week, the girls and I started positive talk again. When I pick them up from school, they have to tell me one positive thing from their day. It has been nice, because I already see and feel a difference in our drive home.

Before when they would get in the car and talk about their day, there were many times when they would focus on things like arguments with friends, a headache they had, how hard math was or when a friend did not play with them at recess. The nurturing side of me always coddled them and tried to solve the problems with them, but I have noticed that it only leads them to continue to come home with new problems and feel sorry for themselves about things.

I want them to have enough faith & strength to deal with the challenges of the day, but at the end of the day feel grateful for what is good. Now that we have been talking about the positive things, I think it is really making them look for the good. Some days they even name more than one positive thing, which is just fabulous!

Here is the most recent prayer that I posted on our fridge for them to read aloud at mealtime:

Dear Lord,
Thank you for a wonderful day full of blessings.
The bible says: Give thanks in all circumstances. That means you want us to be happy and thankful even when things do not always go as planned.
Even when my day is not perfect, I know that you have blessed me.

A grateful heart is so important. When I hear others complaining or feeling bad about things, please help me to focus on the positive.

Amen.

When I look at this picture of our daughters and nieces my heart is flooded with gratitude...

Let us be Grateful

May we be filled with peace and love today.
May we understand that today is good.
Yes, it could be better.
Yes, it could be worse.
However we choose to feel
about this particular day,
Let us recognize that it is ours.
To do with it as we please.
To hug our children.
To love our spouses.
To smile at strangers in passing.

May we trust in God's plan.
Let us not be burdened by our daily struggles.
Let us not attempt to change the things we cannot,
but focus on the things we can.
May we simply...live.
Completing our every day chores
with a happy heart.
Loving.
Learning.
Praying.
Enjoying.

May His presence surround us.
May our souls be blessed, cleansed,
renewed, free.
May we be grateful today and every day.

A Season to be Thankful (poem)

If it were possible for me to gather up all of the love in the world and comfort you with it, I would.
To make you feel as wonderful as I do today.
You see, my world has become imperfectly perfect.
To step out of a mindset that had kept you broken, confused and angry and step into a life of love, freedom and possibility...
I can’t even begin to express the joy that overwhelms me.
The beauty that I see.
The gratitude that I feel.
You see, the stages of loss are textbook.
The character that develops as a result, is not.
You will experience much of what I have.
You will come to a point when you realize that you can do everything alone.
Then the most wonderful thing will happen.
You will realize that you are not alone.
It was you and Him all along.
He will provide for you, if you allow Him to.
There is much beauty to be found in silence, solitude and surrender.
On that day that you hear His whisper, you understand that you were not meant to be alone.
No, you will not understand everything.
WHY. WHEN. WHAT IF.
But you understand the HOW and the WHO.
When our life becomes complicated, unbearable and harsh, I believe that He is crying with us.
He is standing by offering us peace.
Waiting to help.
Wanting to help.
“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose,” He says.
Several Thanksgivings ago, I was full of tears and heartache.
Standing there with my vision blurred.
I remember that time, because it was my time.
My time to weep.
But HE was there to help me move past that SEASON.
I am grateful for that season and for that pain that I experienced.

That moment led me to this one.
I am especially thankful for this season because I “Live, Get, Embrace, Laugh, Dance, and Love.”
He has given us all many reasons to be thankful and HOPEFUL!
If you happen to find yourself with a blurred vision this holiday, remember that He is there.
Forget the other voices and listen for HIS.
Forget the WHY and focus on the WHO.
Let His peace fill you up this holiday and remember that He has promised that your “time” will come.

May He be everything that you need this season and may you have a very blessed THANKSGIVING!
