Choosing Love and Forgiveness

A few nights ago, I was pretty tired and grumpy with my husband just before bed.

I knew the grumpy words exchanged before we went to sleep were my fault, so when I woke up in the middle of the night I left a sappy note on his sink.

It led to his usual kiss on the forehead before he left for work.

Then, later that morning I text him.

ME:   Truth - Sorry, I took my mood out on you. Have a good day.
HIM:  Dare - I dare to love you through every annoying time and fantastic time. Hehe, love you!!!
ME:  LOL! I Double Dare you baybay!

...from there we sent a few jokes back and forth and it ended with...

HIM: LOL! I love you!!!!

Funny isn’t it?

How silly little things, like being tired can affect our mood with each other and how we have the option to let those little things turn into BIG things or to swallow our pride and resolve the issues immediately.

When it comes to our relationships, we can choose pride, stubbornness and anger, or we can choose love.

It takes something as simple as one person choosing to apologize and acknowledge when they are at fault, and the other person choosing to forgive, instead of holding onto a grudge.

Truth: My marriage is not a perfect marriage, but because of the lack of stubbornness, the willingness to apologize, the ability to be silly with each other, it sometimes feels like we are close!

It is flawed, but it is also forgiving.

It is fallible, but it is also uplifting.

Our Father gives us the knowledge we need and the ability to do the right thing when it comes to making choices that will foster healthy, happy relationships.
Our relationships will never be perfect, because as people we are not perfect.
However, our relationships can be filled with so much happiness and love.
When we work towards learning to love each other as the Lord desires us to, it becomes a habit to focus on the positive qualities of others and to cover their flaws with acceptance!
Christ has taught us to keep forgiveness in our heart at all costs.
We were made to love each other.

It’s an expectation that may not always be easy as easy as we'd like, but how fortunate we are to have the opportunity to love and be loved.

What Am I Invested In?

I have just started attended BSF
(Bible Study Fellowship.)
The girls and I completed our first week of homework and then,
yesterday was the first time we met with our small groups.

I really enjoyed myself.
When I got home I was very chatty with my husband,
I told him about the notes that I took and about some of the things I had learned.

One very powerful section that we discussed...

1 Thessalonians 5:2-4... for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you, brothers, are not in darkness...

Wow!
I enjoy reading the Bible,
but even more so when I get to share my thoughts,
feelings and ideas with other believers.

At the end of the night, during the lecture,
as I was listening to the speaker talk about Thessalonians
and about Paul's journey,
the persecution he endured and the love that he had for people,
I began jotting down how Paul was an encourager.
Then as I heard the speaker say...

BELIEVERS ARE ENCOURAGING

It led me think about the people in my life.
I thought of who I intend to encourage,
and then I wondered...

What am I invested in?
Who am I invested in?

Whew! My list was of things and people that I believe God
would deem worthy!

Next, I wrote down that

BELIEVERS NEED ENCOURAGEMENT

and I thought about the people in my life,
that I am not only invested in, but that are invested in me.
Of course, God, my husband and my kids were at the top of the list again,
but it was kind of an eye-opening moment.

Because one of the things that has really been important to me the past few years
is having really good people surround around our children.
Children are influenced by so many people.
And many times, even though in our home we are taught "values"
society's standards can easily become a way of life.

I want our children to make better choices than we did,
and I realized that BSF is a good step towards making this happen.
It's not only a way for me and the girls to get a better understanding of the Bible,
but it's teaching them dedication and discipline
and it is putting them in an environment with people
who are there because they love God and desire to know more.

I truly hope that as they grow,
Bible lessons and devotions, church visits, and BSF meetings
will not be something that they "did" as a kid,
but will be a way of life.

I will do many things in this life,
but the most important thing I can and will ever do
will be to raise loving, healthy, happy Christian kids.

**********************

Dear Lord,
I pray that our girls will make valuable and healthy friendships.
That they will be a positive example to their loved ones,
and that they will also have friends that encourage them to live a Christian life as well.
AMEN!

Marriage Mondays: Keeping Score

Even when my husband is having a tough day,
one would rarely be able to notice,
because of the way he treats me.

He kisses me good morning and good night.
He hugs me hello and good-bye.
He thanks me, and compliments me throughout the day.

I did not ask for it.
I did not expect it.
In fact, I didn't even know this much kindness
in a relationship was possible.

He has taught me so much!

When I think of the way he loves me, I feel a little guilty.
I haven't really done much to deserve all of this sweet treatment.
However, I fully accept it!

He loves me more than enough,
and I am constantly attempting to make him feel just as loved.
I believe that this is the perfect example of when
"Keeping Score"
in a relationship is healthy.

Keeping score should not be about women and men keeping track of whether their partners “work” as hard as they do.

We all need to know that our partners are just as dedicated to making the relationship work, but when one spouse is overly concerned with making sure that the workload is distributed equally between the two, it gives that person less time to worry about the love and consideration that he or she is giving to the other spouse.

Men and women who are worried about “fairness” in their relationships, can tend to put little to no value on what their spouses contribute to the marriage.

Keeping score should be about women and men loving their partners to their fullest abilities.

If we are going to keep a mental checklist, let it be of all the wonderful things that our spouses do for us so that we will to be more considerate and loving towards them.

The kind of relationship where a couple is less worried about what “you can do for me” and is more concerned with “what I can do for you” thrives beautifully!

My husband and I don't rotate responsibilities.
Saying prayer with the kids, doing the dishes, washing the laundry, getting up with the children, keeping the pantry stocked…are things that I would do regardless of whether I worked outside of the home or not.

I do these things because I take pride in my role as the woman of the home.

My husband did not “expect” these things of me in the beginning of our relationship, but he was always certain to tell me how much he “appreciated” what I did, and his loving affirmations worked.

While I have always had these expectations of myself,
because I know that God expects us to be “diligent and fruitful,”
I now do it even happier,
because I have a husband who often shows appreciation for the things that I do.

I am constantly reminding myself to thank him for the things that he does,
because I know that I am lucky to have him here to help.

So today's challenge is to...
Think of a few things that our husband (or wife) does to make our lives a little easier
and send him a text thanking him!

Snowman Pancakes & Porcupine Wives

I saw this on
Pinterest.
My kids love pancakes,
 & I love a chance to create,
 so I had to try...
They came out so cute!

Also, I wanted to share a post that I read a few days ago.

I am happy to say,
I am NOT a porcupine wife.
I may have my (less than perfect;) days,
but I know that
I make a choice
to be intentional in my marriage
everyday.

&

That's the beauty
of God & growth.

Happy Sunday!

Real Men, Real Life & other Thoughts

Happy Wednesday friends.

Sharing two things today!

One is a video, that really speaks to my heart.

As you know, I am so VERY passionate about my man and all he does for our family.

This video is such a a great reminder about what is needed from our men,
and what they provide for us.

Thank God for the love and strength we find in them!

Also, I came across this devotional today and wanted to share some of it:

So don't be anxious about tomorrow. God will take care of you tomorrow too. Live one day at a time. Matthew 6:34

King George V wrote on the fly leaf of the Bible of a friend,
"The secret to happiness is not to do what you like to do,
but to learn to like what you have to do."

To many people think of happiness as some sort of will-of-the-wisp thing that is discovered by constant and relentless searching. It is not found by seeking. It is not an end itself. Pots of gold are never found at the end of the rainbow, as we thought when we were children; gold is mined from the ground or panned laboriously from a mountain stream.

-Billy Graham

A few thoughts on this Wednesday....

Sometimes our situation seems bleak,
and our circumstances unfair,
we all have to work to overcome things.
Know that this is your life.
Own up to your life.
If you can, make it right and then move on.
Make things happen.
Don't give up.
Don't forget that love is what matters the most.
Don't neglect the ones who love you.
Don't forget to pray.
Don't forget that you are not alone.
Don't forget that every one of us is dealing
with some sort of trial.
Don't forget that a life of success,
is often filled with struggle and stress.
Don't forget that God has a plan,
but you have free reign,
so make your choices wisely.
Don't forget you get what you give, so give good!
Don't forget to be grateful for what you do have.
Don't forget to love yourself in the process!

Life IS what we make of it, each day counts,
so let's make today a good one!

I am off to enjoy another day with the kiddos, on this Spring Break day.

Toodles! <3>

Marriage Maintenance

A few days ago as I was sitting in the school’s parking lot our truck suddenly started shaking and the check engine light came on. I quickly dropped the kids off and headed home to tell my husband what was happening.
It was a short distance, but it felt like forever. The car felt like it was stalling and even though I was pushing on the gas pedal it was driving slower than usual.

It is a funny thing about those vehicles, when they need attention, they need attention. However, it is not an occasional thing. Vehicles need constant maintenance. It turned out that a part had gone bad and it needed to be replaced. Without that specific part, that one component, our truck would stop working altogether.
When we keep up with the simple things like oil changes, tire rotations and even putting gas in the car, we help to prevent much bigger issues later, like blowing a head gasket, a tire, or running out of fuel on the highway!
Marriages require constant maintenance too.
Maintenance: actions performed to keep a machine or system functioning or in service
Communication, working together, doing kind things for each other, being honest and considerate in all circumstances helps keep the marriage working properly.
Different components are needed in a relationship to ensure that it is running “smoothly,” and if we neglect the routine maintenance, those components will suffer because of it.
Respect, love, compassion, commitment, romance, Christ…
Our marriages require these.

My husband and I have not had much time for each other, since both of the girls have been sick. The kids have needed most of our attention and even in the evening when we usually wind down together, we had not been able to. Our little sickies had us sleeping apart the last few nights.
Because of this and few other things going on at home, we have been tired, stressed and little irritable.
Yesterday, while the vehicle was at the dealership getting work done, my husband worked from home. When I got back from the field trip, I drove him to the dealership to pick up the truck. On the way back, as I was following behind him he kept looking in his driver side mirror acting like he was a stranger flirting with me.
He raised his eyebrows, put his hand to his ear, and acted as if he was telling me to call him. I have had him do this to me dozens of times, but it never gets old. He makes me laugh and I love that he flirts with me and takes the time to romance me.
A little romance was definitely needed after the week we have had. Although, a little romance is always needed and appreciated!
After we had gone to bed, I heard a knock on the door, and I laid there for a minute. I had started feeling a little sick a few hours before and did not want to get out of bed. It was the 6th night in a row that our sleep was interrupted because the girls woke up not feeling well, and to be honest, I was completely exhausted.

After a second knock, my husband did not budge. I know he hears it, because the brat groans a little when his sleep is disturbed. So, I got up anyway. I am always the one to get up and tend to the kids in the middle of the night.
Respect.

It is maintenance. I choose to be respectful of the fact that he has to get up earlier than us and head to work. He has a tough job and he needs sleep and a clear head to do what he does during the day.
There are marriages where the women feel they “make their men carry their weight” by asking him to wake up and care for the kids at night, because they are up with them all day. There are also other families where both the mother and the father work outside of the home and so the parents take turns.
We each do what works for us. However, even when I was working full-time I didn't take that route. I've always considered homemaking as my job and caring for the children as part of that.
When Jocelyn was a baby, I would wake up with her and carry her to the rocker in the living room to soothe her to sleep so that my husband could get enough rest for work.
These days I do the same thing. When the kids wake, I wake with them. He could. I could nudge him and say ‘hey, I haven’t had a full nights rest in a week and I could use it’, and I am sure he would help, but I choose not to. He works out of the home and I work in the home, and I feel this comes with the territory.
After reading a post on The 5 C's of a Successful Marriage, I was reminded that Compassion is one of the components needed in a marriage. It reminded me of something else I have recently started doing for my husband, and I must say, I am very proud of myself, because I really do not enjoy it at all! I have started ironing my husband’s work clothes before I hang them up. I have never done that. I wash, fold, and hang, but I used to only iron before I was about to wear something.
However, my husband really dislikes ironing before he heads out to work. So I have decided to save him some time and iron the pants and shirts that come out of the drier wrinkly for him before I hang them up. I feel good about it too, because I am doing a little something to make the man I love's life a little easier. It is a gift.
I believe that the role that the woman plays in the marriage is so important and that even the smallest, most mundane task, matters.
It may sound a little old fashioned, but I am okay with that!
Our marriage takes priority and we both do our part in this marriage. My husband does so much for our family and so these are a few of the small things that I do for ‘us.’
Marriage is a give and take. It is a “system” that needs routine maintenance to keep it in good shape and I am happy to do my part.

This post will be linked with Marriage Mondays.

Crazy About My Baybah

Our Wonderful Men

Yesterday, I watched another Dr. Phil episode, (yes, againJ!) The last one I caught had a woman on it who was so fearful that she was going to be attacked in her own home that her family had spent over $16,000 on home security. The thing that caught my attention though, was not the fact that she had an out of control phobia, it was her husband.
How he loved her! When he was asked questions about his wife, he told Dr. Phil that he felt like a failure, because he could not make his wife feel protected. He actually had to pause, because he got tears over the fact that he felt like he was not doing his job. He wanted to protect his wife and make her feel safe, but nothing he had done had been successful.
He was doing all he could for her. Her phobia was out of his control and yet, he felt like he was at fault.
It was such a sweet thing. It made me think of my husband, and the men in my life, who care so much about their families.
So many men go through such lengths to love, protect and provide for their families.
They endure so much stress. Especially during times like this, when so many companies have been forced to close their doors or have had to layoff employees. Times are tough.  Luckily, our men are too, but this husband was a reminder that sometimes they are not as tough, as they let on.
Men take it hard when they are not able to provide everything they would like to for their families.
It is so important for us wives and mothers, to not only be supportive during the difficult times, but also to be appreciative and remember, that our men always provide us with the most important thing they can - love.

A tender moment between my brother & his daughter

(1 Timothy 5:8, 1 Peter 3:1-7)

Just another day to be thankful...

Happy Friday friends!

Project 31 ~ What Jesus has taught me...

Day 10: What has Jesus taught you as a wife, mom or friend?

Jesus has taught me many things.

Christ embodies love, sacrifice, kindness, humility, surrender, compassion and so many inspiring traits, but the one thing that Jesus has taught me more than any other is forgiveness.

And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. (Ephesians 4:32)

Forgiveness is freedom!

We forgive people for their actions. We forgive life for throwing curveballs our way. We forgive ourselves for making mistakes. We forgive God when we have moments that make us question our circumstances.

Choosing to forgive has made me a better wife. It makes my marriage fun and carefree. It means that even when we disagree, we can quickly get over it.

I love my husband too much to remain angry.

Choosing to forgive has also made me a better mom. Even though I am no longer with my ex husband, my daughter sees that we get along. As she matures, she will know that we loved her enough to forgive each other for the past. Too many children suffer because of divorce. The parents choose to stay angry, the kids know all of the details of the divorce, they are thrown in the middle of arguments and the children end up having issues of their own.

I love my daughter too much to remain angry.

Choosing to forgive has also made me a better person. Life gets complicated. I have made many mistakes in this life, but I forgive myself. I have given myself a chance to start over and I encourage others to do the same.

I love myself too much to remain angry.

Do not choose to be bitter, choose to be better.

We become bitter because we hold onto our hurts, but everyone has hurts.

Choose Forgiveness.

Forgiveness makes us stronger. There is a misconception that forgiveness makes us weak. That when we forgive we are giving in to another person that tried to hurt us or a hardship that tried to bring us down. People believe that if we stay angry we are tough, but anger does not make us tough. Anger makes us unhappy and unhappiness makes us weak, and let us be honest, angry people are no fun to be around.

I have not seen an episode of Doctor Phil in forever, but yesterday, the show looked intense and so I kept it on. At the end of the show, Dr. Phil said these words,

"You don't forgive the people that deserve it. You forgive the people that YOU deserve to be free of. You deserve to forgive them. It does not mean that what they did was okay or that he/she deserves your forgiveness, it means that you refuse to invest your life and energy on them! Tell yourself this situation needs a hero and it's going to be me."

It was such a powerful ending.

He is telling us to set ourselves free. Forgive, not for them. Forgive for us.

The easy thing to do, the weak thing to do, is to stay angry. Anger, hate, bitterness...those are easy emotions. Forgiving and loving those who have sinned against us is hard work, but it is possible.

To do this we have to remove our pride, but who needs pride anyway?

We don't need to be proud, we need to be humble, we need to be grateful.

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. (Proverbs 11:2)

We need to realize that everything we have and everything that we accomplish is because of God.

Every good and perfect gift is from above. (James 1:17)

Christ loves us and He wants us to let go of our hurts.

He wants us to forgive.

He will give us the strength to do so.

Jesus helped me to let go of my hurts and to forgive.

If you have not done so already, I challenge you to let go of yours!

Do not focus on all of the ways that she/he hurt you.

Do not hold on to the fact that not all of your prayers have been answered.

Don't hold on to all of the illnesses that have affected your family.

Don't focus on the losses you have suffered.

Just let go and let God.

It really is empowering...

Allow yourself to forgive.

Allow yourself to let go.

Allow yourself to be free.

Allow Christ to work miracles in your life.

Project 31 & A Tribute

Today is day 5 for Project 31 and the focus is "someone who made my heart come alive."

Of course, the obvious answer is my husband! He is the first person that comes to mind, because of how absolutely thoughtful and loving he has been to me and my daughter. These past 3 years have been amazing and I am so blessed.

However, some of you know, this has been a difficult time for many of my family members. We have had 3 deaths this month. One of which, was my Great Aunt Ramona.

Ramona Casias (left) 2008

About 10 years ago, I was collecting letters from family members and friends to create a personal memoir/ scrapbook. Sweet Aunt Ramona, who I am sure made many hearts "come alive" mailed me a beautiful letter and I would be honored to share it:

 *************************************************

First I must apologize for being so late, as it is way past Thanksgiving.

My name is Ramona Casias. I am 76 years old. I was born in Lamar, Colorado on August 8th, 1924. My parents were Apolonio and Relles Rodriguez. They were born in Aguas Caliente Mexico and came to the United States in 1912. They raised a family of 12. Seven girls and five boys. We always worked out on farms. We all attended school in Delta, Co and in 1940 we moved to Montrose, where I met the Casias family.

In 1946, I married Roy Casias after World War II and (after he completed) his service. He was in the South Pacific for almost 3 years, mostly in New Guinea and the Philippines. He came home January of 1946 and we married on the 19th of January.

Our first son, Steven, was born May 23, 1947. Our second son, Daniel was born 1949. Our daughter Martha was born 1952. Our son David was born in 1955. I am very proud of my children.

My family is the most important part of my life. My nieces, my in-laws (Florence, Virginia, Rose, Virgil, Tere) and all of their families and my sister in Sacramento, Ca. I only have 1 brother and 1 sister left.

Roy and I liked to attend church regularly. He and I were Eucharistic ministers at mass. I still attend mass. I am a lifetime member of Ladies Veteran Auxiliary and Roy was a lifetime member of Veteran of Foreign Wars. He was very proud of his service to his country.

After he came back, he thought God had brought him back for a purpose and he built many houses.
Our marriage was always busy. We both worked hard and God blessed us for 52 great years. He was one great man. I have missed him every day since he has been gone, but God chose for me to go on living.

My most memorable moment was the birth of my children.

My favorite prayer is the 23rd Psalm.

I have enjoyed life. Everyday is a miracle that God gives us. A beautiful sunset or sunrise. The beauty of a rainbow. The beauty in a child's eyes. The love a mother has for her child. God has given us so much.

What you are doing has made me think of my life, my childhood, my life in general and I truly think God has blessed me.

Thank you so much and may God Bless you always.

Love Always,
Aunt Ramona

 ***************************************************

When I think of Aunt Ramona I think of a petite woman, with a big heart. We have heard that the eyes are the window to the soul and this statement comes to mind when remembering my Aunt. She had these eyes that looked at you with so much love and a smile that exuded kindness.

Growing up we often traveled to Colorado for family reunions and other celebrations. They were fun times, full of chatty people that were happy to reunite and catch up on the latest news. I always noticed that Aunt Ramona sat quietly with the other women in our family. She seemed to spend most of her time watching, listening and smiling. She struck me as timid and I always felt comfortable visiting with her, because I was quite shy myself.

As I read her favorite prayer, the last line really comforted me, "Surely goodness and love will follow me all of the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." I smiled, because I noticed that she had passed just a few days before her Wedding Anniversary and I could just imagine Uncle Roy welcoming her into Heaven with a big hug, just in time to celebrate.

~And God Bless You Aunt Ramona...

Until we meet again.

Project 31: Who Inspires Beauty & A Guest Post

Today, I am linking up with Mandy at She Breathes Deeply. She started a blog project called Project 31 which is focused on celebrating the beauty of women and Proverbs 31. Today's topic is...

Who inspires beauty?
My Mom.
The bible says that God knows our hearts, and I am sure that when he looks into my Mother’s heart he sees the epitome of beauty; what a woman should be.
A wife of 33 years.
A mother to six (now 11).
A grandmother to 13.
Strong, compassionate, honest, loving, embracing, hardworking, forgiving, fair, selfless, repenting, generous, and so much more…
There is not a memory that I have of my mother that I would not be glad to share with the world.
Even those moments when her eyes were full of tears, her face full of worry, or her mouth turned down with frustration she was filled with dignity, strength and grace.
My mother is a listener. When she does choose to speak about a situation her words are worthy and her intentions are pure.
She prays about everything and encourages all of the women in her life by modeling a Christian life.
As I raise my own children, I find myself always looking back and asking, how would Mom handle this situation?
She is the perfect example of beauty and
of what a woman should be.
I am blessed to call her Mom.

She Breathes Deeply

I was given an opportunity to do a guest post for Warren at Family Fountain  today. He has a wonderful book that I am reading at the moment and I really enjoy his site. It is always filled with so much wonderful and useful information. If you have a moment please stop in!

Happy Sunday!

Fear, Fear Go Away

I did not know this kind of happiness was possible, but it is.
I find myself feeling overwhelmed with gratitude.
Although, some days I must admit, I am overwhelmed with fear.
I am not used to all of this happiness.
I wonder, will it last forever?
Will it end?
I get scared that this feeling, this life is too good to be true...
and that someday my world might come crashing down.
Isn’t that crazy?
I have all of this happiness and yet, my mind has a tendency to focus on fear…on the what if…
Anxiety has always been a bit of a problem, but I usually keep it under control. I try to manage it with positive thinking and prayer and I am trying to teach my daughter to do the same, because she has tendency to have anxiety.
I am not afraid that anything will happen to my marriage, my fear is of the unknown...accidents, illness, other unpreventable situations…life can be unpredictable and that scares me...
I just want to be here in this house, in this marriage, with our kids…always J
However, as much as I would like to stay in a little bubble forever, I know we cannot, life just keeps on happening.

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:10

Marriage Mondays: He Calls the Shots

When we know love matters more than anything, and we know that nothing else really matters, we move into the state of surrender. Surrender does not diminish our power, it enhances it.
~Sara Paddison

I never really thought that I was the submissive type.
I was the oldest of six children.
I was a college grad, studious, opinionated and independent.
For a while, I was a single mom figuring things out on my own, doing everything that needed to be done for my daughter and myself.
Then everything changed.
I fell in love and got married.
Before I knew it, I got over the fear of losing myself in a relationship and I realized that by letting go, I actually found a part of myself that I never knew existed.
The Me that enjoys trusting my spouse with my heart, my future, my family, my life.
The Me that realizes that even if life gets a little sideways, temporarily falls off track, or if we end up in an unexpected situation, we will be okay.
After all, all we really need is our faith and each other and we already have that.
I have whole-heartedly surrendered.
I have faith that my husband will lead our family the best way he knows how, and he has faith that I will be there to support him every step of the way.
It does not mean that my opinions or feelings do not matter, because the truth is that we talk about everything beforehand.
When moments do come up that we do not see eye to eye or if he happens to think I get disagreeable, he straight out tells me, “Submit woman!” I laugh thinking about it!  ~ It’s only funny to us, because we both know that I like to be disagreeable on purpose at times, however, in the end he has the final say.
My role as his wife is to let him know that I trust his decisions and to pray for the outcome.
He calls the shots. I call on God.

Ephesians 5:21 -25
Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church.

I am Spoiled

This weekend my husband had to work in Tucson and I decided to tag along. The children were going to be away at their other homes and so we decided to use this opportunity as a little getaway for two.
As we were walking out of the hotel to get our bags, we both stopped at the door. After standing there for a few moments, my husband realized the door was not going to open. He said, “I thought it would open automatically.”
I started giggling and said, “I was waiting for it to open automatically too!” I knew it was not an automatic door, but it has become a habit to stand there when my husband is next to me and let him open it.
“Spoiled.” He teased and well, it is true.
I am grateful for him every day. We are constantly thanking each other and reminding each other how blessed we are to have our relationship. We don’t let the kind deeds that we do for each other go unnoticed, but this was different…it was like an “ah-ha” moment.
Ah-ha, I really am a creature of habit and it has become a habit to let him spoil me!
My husband always opens my door when we are out running errands, at dinner or just getting into the car at the house. He is a gentleman and I noticed it right away after our first few dates.
On our first date, I met him at a restaurant. That day he waited for me in front of the restaurant, paid for dinner and after dinner, he walked me to my car.
On the second date, he brought me a single rose.
On the third date, he brought me chocolate pretzels. I didn’t even remember telling him they were my favorite, but later he told me he read it on my About Me section on Myspace and wanted to surprise me. He was paying attention to things that I did not even expect!
On the fourth date, he stood up each time I rose up from my chair to walk away from the table and he offered to help me drive my grandma home.
He spoiled me. He made me feel like a lady and he still does.
Even on the days that I have no makeup on, paint in my hair, stinky morning breath and mismatched housework clothes he tells me I am beautiful. I do not always believe him, but… it is the thought that counts!
As I was unpacking our Christmas ornaments this year, I came across the very first ornament I bought him. It was a boat and when I bought it I had our names printed on it along with the year and the words “Cheese and margaritas.” The boat reminded me of one of the very first moments that his spoiling me caused me to realize…whoa, I am falling for this guy.
He took me and a few friends out on his boat during the first summer that we were dating and while we were out, like a true gentleman, he kept offering us food and drinks from the icebox.
At one point, everyone was eating sandwiches and as I was drying off from the water, I said aloud to my friends that I was not hungry and would probably just have a drink and some cheese. Two minutes later, my husband was handing me an opened drink fresh out of the icebox and an unwrapped a slice of cheese.
He was listening. I was his number one priority that day… and have felt like it every day since.
It wasn’t the things that won me over, it was the thought.
He listened and paid attention to my needs from the very beginning. Even when I had no idea that he was listening, he was.
Romance is an important part of any new relationship, but because of my history, I had learned to look past the initial “wining and dining”. Any man can tell a woman what she wants to hear, and any man can buy a woman a few small gifts to make her feel “special,” but not every man truly gives from the heart.
My husband did. He lived the best he could and most importantly, he was a believer.
After being together for 3 years, my husband’s courteous behavior and considerate ways are strong and show no signs of fading. He continues to make me feel special each day, using some traditional tactics, like opening my door and in other ways, when he gets creative and tries to surprise me.
The way he loves me has made me realize that his love for me is about much more than…well… ME…
I Peter 3:7, teaches that the husband is to honor and love his wife.
Because my husband is a believer, he honors God.
Because he honors God, he also honors me!
These values are instilled in him. They are a way of life, and because of that…
I am spoiled.
